James Charles Lawrence, founder of J.C.Lawrence & Sons established his photographic company in the late 1800s in Gosport, after having studied this new artform in Paris and London. He documented many scenes from the town along with pictures of all the military and naval establishments in and around the town. In the gallery above he can be seen at Fort Grange in his “Photographer’s Tent” with his eldest son Louis. Louis took his school leaving exams at twelve years old in order to join and take over the family business and cheifly, the taking of photographs. He was later joined by his brother Arthur. In turn, Louis’ son David ran the family business until 2005.
