Here you will see images of Gosport waterfront and Portsmouth Harbour. We start with a photograph of the launch of a luxury yacht from Camper and Nicholson’s yard in the 1930s. This is followed by an early picture of the chain ferry, on which if you look carefully, you can see horses being transported across the harbour. The photograph of Portsmouth Harbour from Gosport circa 1898-1902 has been split into two smaller images to show how much detail is contained in the glass plate negatives that were used in early photography.
In 1895 the winter was so cold that the harbour froze solid and people walked over the ice from Gosport to Portsmouth. Later in the 1930s, the ferry was very much in use, with a new pontoon. Always a hive of activity, you can see the ferry gardens in the 1930s and the 1950s, providing not only a hub for transport, but as a place to view navy ships entering or leaving the harbour. As the pictures of the sailing club show, the waterfront is also a favorite place for sailing.
